The theme of this year’s TEDxAruba is “What if…?”
‘What if..’ is an open question that challenges and provokes to radically shake-up the status quo within the spectrum of Tech, Education and Design, thereby enabling the development of actions worth doing and ideas worth spreading. Examples of such questions are ‘What if..the concept of money were wiped out?’ or ‘What if.. we shifted the concept of education?’ These are very exiting topics and our speakers will be providing such visions, actions and ideas during TEDxAruba 2016.
WHAT IF: TWO WORDS ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
Everybody knows Aruba as a paradise on earth with beautiful beaches and palm trees, where you can have the best vacation ever. But did you know that Aruba is more than a vacation island and that it has the ambition to create a 100% sustainable society?
Aruba is doing that by creating a new economic pillar: A sustainable knowledge economy. Located at one of the best places in the world Aruba acts like a hub between the America’s, Europe and the Caribbean region. Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and with its unique position has grown into a living lab on all levels of sustainable challenges and solutions.
The journey to a sustainable society is very inspiring and already has shown impressive results. With this momentum, Aruba creates the perfect place for existing- and start-up companies to research and showcase their great ideas, find solutions for global challenges and
share their expertise. The goal is to find creative ways to contribute to a sustainable society and eventually to the rest of the world.
Started as a four-day conference in California in 1984, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.
TED is a non-profit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.
TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
TEDxAruba strives for sustainable innovation, new business creation and bringing idea’s to live, not only for Aruba, but also for other similar small economies and the rest of the world.
The TEDxAruba mission, like the TED mission, is to propagate Ideas worth Spreading and Actions worth Doing; to inform and inspire. Our specific goal is to turn TEDxAruba into the Caribbean’s leading platform and pipeline for great ideas, storytelling, creativity and actionable innovation. In addition to this, our goal is to foster a sense of community amongst the people and organizations who have gathered (and continue to gather) around this event and to provide a cultural driving force for conversation and action on how to create a sustainable society.
Our specific goal is to turn TEDxAruba into the Caribbean’s leading platform and pipeline for great ideas, storytelling, creativity, actionable innovation.
TEDxAruba is an independently organized event licensed from TED to official TEDx ambassador Jim Stolze and organized by the TEDxAruba Foundation. Together with a network of fellow thinkers and do-ers and long time collaborators, this team has put together a platform and pipeline for the spreading of (Aruban) sustainable ideas, solutions, creativity, innovation and culture to the rest of the world.
